Charles Bridge at night at a glance
The bridge is a public footpath that people normally walk around the clock. At night the lamps on the bridge are gas lamps. There is no fixed switch-on time, and you should not count on every statue being lit, so do not plan around a single moment.
The towers, the Old Town Hall and the museums close well before dark in most months. What stays open is the walk itself, the river and the view. An evening on the bridge is a short stop in a longer walk, not a full programme.

An evening walk in three parts
A simple route that keeps the bridge at the centre.
1. Old Town Square to the bridge
Start at the square, where the clock shows its figures on the hour until 23:00. From there it takes about 10 minutes along Karlova street to the Old Town end of the bridge.
Old Town Square →2. Across the bridge
Walk slowly to the middle, then turn to look at the castle and at the reflection of the arches in the river. The Old Town Bridge Tower marks the start of the walk, and the Lesser Town towers wait at the far end.
3. Malá Strana and the tram home
On the Malá Strana side, Malostranské náměstí is a short walk from the bridge. Trams 12, 15, 20, 22 and 23 stop there, and night tram 97 runs in the dark hours.
If you want the same view with fewer people, come back at first light. The sunrise page shows where to stand.

Staying safe among the crowds
The police give general advice for busy tourist places, and it applies here as it does on any crowded street. Carry your bag closed and in front of you. Keep valuables out of outer pockets. Keep money and documents in different places, so a single loss does not leave you with nothing.
If something is stolen, block your cards and report it to the police. The emergency number for the police is 158. The advice is the same as for any busy place in the centre, so there is no reason to skip the walk. Keep your attention where the crowd is thickest, usually near the tower and in the middle.
Street artists and sellers on the bridge need permission to work there. A performer who stops when asked is following that rule, not being rude.

What is open in the evening
Hours in 2026. Sunset and dark come at very different times through the year.
| Place | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town Bridge Tower | Closes 18:00 (January to March, October, November), 19:00 (April, May), 19:30 (December), 20:30 (June to September) | CZK 250 adults; 138 steps |
| Lesser Town Bridge Tower | Same closing times | CZK 200 adults |
| Old Town Hall | Closes 19:00 (January to March), 20:00 (April to December) | Tower and Knights Hall; lift extra |
| Prague Castle grounds | Until 22:00 | Historic buildings close at 16:00 or 17:00 |
| Astronomical Clock figures | Every hour until 23:00 | Watch from the square |
The towers close before the lamps matter, even in summer. Do the tower in the afternoon or early evening and the bridge once the lamps are on.
Getting home after dark
Night trams cover both ends of the bridge: line 93 at Karlovy lázně on the Old Town side and line 97 at Malostranské náměstí on the Malá Strana side. Check the current timetable for your day before you rely on them.
A 90-minute ticket costs CZK 50 on paper or CZK 46 in the PID Lítačka app (2026), and a 30-minute ticket costs CZK 39 or CZK 36. Stamp a paper ticket once before your first ride. In trams and buses you can pay with a contactless card at the terminal, but not on board a Metro train.
The airport has night buses 907 and 910, each about 45 minutes to the centre. They do not stop at the bridge, so plan a short walk or tram ride from the stop where you get off.

Charles Bridge at night: frequently asked questions
Is Charles Bridge safe at night?
It is a busy public place, and the usual advice applies: keep bags closed, valuables out of outer pockets and your attention on your surroundings. The advice is the same as for any crowded spot in the centre.
Can I climb the bridge towers at night?
No. The towers close between 18:00 and 20:30 depending on the season, and 20:30 applies only from June to September.
Is the whole bridge lit?
