Charles Bridge at sunrise at a glance

The bridge links the Old Town and Malá Strana across the Vltava. It is 516 m long, almost 10 m wide and has 16 arches. Walking it costs nothing and needs no ticket or reservation. That makes it one of the easier sunrise spots in Prague: you only have to arrive before the light does.

Sunrise comes much earlier in June than in December, so look up the exact time for your date and be on the bridge about half an hour before. The towers at both ends keep their own opening hours and are shut at dawn. Plan the climb for later in the morning.

Where to stand

Three spots that work, depending on what you want in the frame.

The middle of the bridge, looking northwest

From the centre you look along the river to Prague Castle on the hill. The statues on the parapet lead the eye toward it. The morning light comes from the east.

The same spot, looking west

Turn around the other way and the roofs of Malá Strana and the Lesser Town towers fill the frame. This view suits the first minutes of light, when the sky is still colored and the lamps are on.

The Old Town end

Near the Old Town Bridge Tower you get the tower, the first statues and the long line of the bridge in one picture. It is also the easiest place to start if you come by Metro, because it is a short walk from the station.

These are positions, not promises. Whether the sun shows up between two buildings on a given date depends on the season and the weather, so treat the spots as a starting point and adjust on the day.

Getting there before the light

The closest Metro station is Staroměstská on line A. From there the Old Town end of the bridge is a walk of about 5 minutes. From Old Town Square it takes about 10 minutes via Karlova street. Trams 2, 17 and 18 stop at Karlovy lázně, near the same end. On the Malá Strana side, trams 12, 15, 20, 22 and 23 stop at Malostranské náměstí.

Night trams 93 (Karlovy lázně) and 97 (Malostranské náměstí) serve the two ends of the bridge in the dark hours. A paper ticket for 30 minutes costs CZK 39, or CZK 36 in the PID Lítačka app (2026). Stamp a paper ticket once before your first ride.

If you stay in the Old Town or Malá Strana, you can simply walk. The bridge and the streets around it have old paving, so wear sturdy shoes, and bring a layer even in summer.

What to expect on the bridge

A few practical points.

Fewer people, not none

Mornings can be calmer than midday, but nobody can promise an empty bridge or a clear view at a set time. Street artists and tour groups arrive as the day goes on.

Maintenance is not a closure

Cleaning of piers and statue restoration happen on and around the bridge from time to time. These works are done without closing the bridge to pedestrians. Look around before you pick a spot.

Tripods and drones

Keep a tripod out of the walking line. For drones, airspace zones apply in Prague, and the national drone map shows the limits for your position. Do not assume that flying is allowed here.

Bags and phones

Police advise keeping bags closed and in front of you in a crowd, and valuables out of outer pockets. This matters more once the bridge fills up later in the morning.

Charles Bridge at sunrise: frequently asked questions

What time should I arrive for sunrise?

About half an hour before the sunrise time for your date. Sunrise is much earlier in summer than in winter, so check it the evening before.

Is Charles Bridge open at night and early in the morning?

The bridge is a public footpath and you can normally walk it around the clock. That does not apply to the towers, which have set opening hours, and temporary works can narrow the path.

Will the bridge be empty at sunrise?

It is often quieter than later in the day, but there is no guarantee. Plan for a few other people and treat an empty frame as a bonus.

Can I climb a bridge tower at sunrise?

No. The Old Town Bridge Tower opens at 09:00 from June to September and at 10:00 in other months. The Lesser Town Bridge Tower follows the same hours.

Where is the best place to stand?

The middle of the bridge gives the castle view to the northwest and the Malá Strana view to the west. The Old Town end puts the tower and the statues in the frame.
